Head of AMAT
Samuel Paunila Heads the Ammunition Management Advisory Team (AMAT) since its establishment in January 2019. In 2013–2018, Mr. Paunila was responsible for the Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Demining’s (GICHD) activities related to explosive weapons, residual explosive contamination and ammunition.
In 2003–2012, Mr. Paunila directed humanitarian mine action, ammunition disposal and armed violence reduction programmes with Danish Refugee Council in Africa, Asia and the Middle East. Prior to this, he supervised explosive ordnance disposal and ammunition engineering operations and peacekeeping units with Finnish Defence Force. Work has taken him to over forty countries with longest missions in Afghanistan, the former Yugoslavia, Sri Lanka and Uganda.
First graduated as ammunition and weapon systems technical officer, Mr. Paunila holds BSc in automation engineering and MSc in Resilience from Cranfield University, Defence Academy of the UK.
